SAFETY DATA SHEET (SDS) – CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING

ENSURE THE RIGHT COMMUNICATION OF INFORMATION ON CHEMICALS

SGS has years of experience in the design and elaboration of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) in all European languages and in the classification and labeling of substances and preparations.

Under REACH the SDS is set to become even more important as a means of communication throughout the supply chain. SGS has closely monitored the changes to the SDS under REACH.

On top, the Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) will also be implemented in Europe in the future. Our unparalleled expertise in human and environmental safety will help you in classifying the products in the correct category.

What is SDS?
Manufacturers, importers, downstream users and distributors supplying substances or preparations meeting the criteria for classification as dangerous, further down the supply chain to other downstream users or distributors, are already today required to compile and supply a safety data sheet at the first delivery of a substance or preparation.

Indeed chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are the primary tool for hazard communication for all dangerous substances. They contain details of the hazards associated with a chemical, and gives advice on safety precautions.

Some modifications would occur under REACH. Safety data sheets will continue to contain information on the hazards of the substance, or the preparation, as well as information on the recommended risk management measures to adequately control any risks to health and environment.

SDS is the European format while MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is the American format. Information in the SDS is presented with 16 headings in a specific order.

SDS is used:

  • For:
    • Dangerous substances or preparations according to 67/548/ECC or 1999/45/EC .
    • Preparations not classified as dangerous but containing dangerous substances
  • By:
    • The person who is responsible for placing these substances or preparations on the market (manufacturer, importer or distributor). This person shall supply a professional user with an SDS.

Guidance on the preparation of SDS’s under the requirements of the GHS can be found in Annex 4.
